Stroud District Pub Survival Stories-Pre Pandemic

A series of articles and booklets written before the Covid 19 outbreak have been published on the Village Pub Survival Website (VPS). The articles were based on interviews with the publicans. They describe the publican’s relationship to their enterprise, their unique experiences the nature of their commitment. It is hoped to revisit these publicans in the Spring of 2021 to update their experiences and lives, in the wake of the pandemic and its effects on them and their pubs. The articles feature: The Beacon Inn, Haresfield; The Bell Avening; The Black Horse, Cranham and Amberley; The Carpenters Arms Westrip; The Crown Minchinhampton; The Old Fox Coaley; The Royal Oak Woodchester; and the Vine Tree Randwick.

Six booklets focusing on wider research into the survival of pubs have (10,000 words approx) have also been published on the VPS website. Three of them are in a paperback published form available from the pubs themselves but also loaded here – The Carpenters Arms – Miserden, The Hog – Horsley (New owners so withdrawn) and the Woolpack – Slad and. A fourth booklet focusing on the The Red Lion Arlingham is also on the VPS site. The other two booklets, the Ale House – Stroud and the Butchers Arms – Sheepscombe, were due to be published just prior to the lockdown and will now be published in the Spring of 2022 with an added chapter on the effects of the pandemic on their business and lives.

The Red Lion booklet and the articles focusing on the Black Horse, Cranham, The Bell, Avening and the Old Fox, Coaley are not strictly in our Stroud CAMRA area but neverthless they fit this category of local pub survival stories.
